Hundreds pack into a club lounge at Qualcomm Stadium to urge Mayor Kevin Faulconer's Citizens Stadium Advisory Group to get a deal done for the San Diego Chargers to have a new stadium. Unofficial mascot Boltman holds a sign with that message, March 2, 2015.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and county Supervisor Ron Roberts met with the Chargers owner to discuss the issue of a new stadium for the National Football League team, the mayor's office confirmed Friday.

"On Thursday morning, Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Supervisor Ron Roberts met with Chargers owner Dean Spanos," mayoral spokesman Craig Gustafson said.

He called it "a productive and positive" meeting.

"We look forward to beginning formal discussions with our respective negotiating teams shortly after the Citizens' Stadium Advisory Group releases its final recommendations in two weeks," Gustafson said.

The nine-member advisory group has selected the Qualcomm Stadium site in Mission Valley as the best location for a new playing facility for the Chargers, and has since been working on a financing plan.

As a backup plan, the Chargers have been working to acquire land in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson for a stadium that would be built in conjunction with the Oakland Raiders. Spanos has been wanting a new stadium for more than a dozen years.

Roberts was not available for comment, according to spokesman Tim McClain. Chargers counsel Mark Fabiani declined to comment.

The city and county recently came together to hire legal and financial consultants to take the advisory group's recommendations and help negotiate a final deal on a stadium with the team.
