Camp Pendleton Marine Convicted Of Rape, Assault

A Camp Pendleton Marine who raped and sexually assaulted six women along El Cajon Boulevard over a five-year period was convicted Monday of eight felony charges.

A jury found Ted Amparan guilty of rape, assault with intent to commit rape and kidnapping for rape after a trial that lasted 2 1/2 weeks. He faces 83 years to life in prison when he is sentenced July 7.

Deputy District Attorney Mary-Ellen Barrett said most of the victims were working as prostitutes, except one who was lost, coming from a party, when Amparan approached her in his car.

The prosecutor said the first victim was attacked in 2007, then four others in September 2010 and another in September 2011.

Amparan, 41, was in military uniform when he committed most of the sexual assaults, Barrett said.

She said Amparan would pick up prostitutes on El Cajon Boulevard, then drive them to a parking lot along Camino del Rio South in Mission Valley, where freeway noise made it difficult for anyone to hear their screams.

The woman who was coming from a party when she was targeted was also taken to the Mission Valley location, but was able to scale a six-foot-fence and run across a freeway to get to safety, according to the prosecutor.
