Fatality On Coaster Train Track Causes Short Delays For Southbound Passengers

A pedestrian was fatally struck by a freight train early today in Carlsbad.

The fatality on the tracks in the vicinity of Oak and Washington avenues was reported shortly before 2 a.m., sheriff's Lt. James Bolwerk said. The pedestrian died at the scene.

The southbound Coaster train scheduled to leave Oceanside at 5:13 a.m. was running 10 to 20 minutes behind, according to the North County Transit District.

Although the incident occurred in Carlsbad, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department's Coaster/Railroad Enforcement Unit handles law enforcement services along the tracks.
