A carnival-like atmosphere was punctuated every 10 minutes or so by an announcer shouting the number of meals the children had made.

And the students were given constant encouragement.

“Can you say go faster?” asked the announcer over a loud speaker.

Nonstop cheering and music also kept the students and parent volunteers working and smiling as they put together the meals.

“That vitamin pack, that protein soy meal that goes in there, those are some of the key ingredients that are reversing the effects of starvation,” parent Jenelle Nelson said.

The students packed up 50,000 meals this year. Over the past five years, they have made more than 500,000 meals. This year’s meals are going to Tanzania, but in the past they’ve gone to Haiti and to help tsunami survivors in the Philippines.

Nelson said packing the meals helps students at Santa Fe Christian grow into more giving adults.

“I continuously pray that these children will have that servant heart developed within them,” she said.
