An active shooter has been reported at a community college in western Oregon. At least two people are dead and nine others wounded, according to a county fire marshal.

Earlier, Oregonlive.com quotes Sgt. Dwes Hutson, a Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokesman, as saying "officers responded around 10:40 a.m. (PT) to reports of a shooting at the Umpqua Community College. Huston could not confirm if anyone was injured."

The Oregonian reports that officers responded to reports of an "active shooter" on campus at about 10:40 a.m. PT and said that police scanner traffic indicates the shooter is "down."

Rob Manning of Oregon Public Broadcasting reports, "We are hearing there are multiple casualties being transported away from the [college] with unconfirmed reports of fatalities."

Umpqua Community College is a major institution in that part of the state, Manning says.

The Associated Press reports that the college, located in Roseburg, where the shooting took place, has about 3,000 students. The school's website was down Thursday, and a phone message wasn't immediately returned.
