Homes butt up against one of the former fairways of the Escondido Country Club, Aug. 20, 2014.

The city of Escondido has reached a settlement with a developer who bought the former Escondido Country Club golf course in 2012, shut it down and announced plans to build hundreds of homes on it.

The developer's ensuing battle with nearby residents included spreading chicken manure on the unwatered greens.

The settlement agreement dismisses all litigation and restores residential zoning to the property. Under the agreement, Michael Schlesinger, the owner of the property, will withdraw his plans and choose another developer to start afresh with a new proposal, working more closely with the community.

In a statement from Stuck in the Rough spokesman Dick Daniels, the agreement provides a fresh start for the homebuilder, surrounding neighbors and city to come together and focus on the optimal use for this property.

As part of the agreement, Stuck in the Rough is dismissing all remaining causes of action in the law suit, thereby eliminating additional legal and financial liability costs to the city that could exceed $2 million, according to Daniels' statement.
