San Diego County Departments Search For New Offices

The County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to allow the Probation Department and Health and Human Services Agency to take the first steps toward finding new locations in Mid-City and Southeast San Diego.

Stuck with small facilities and inadequate parking, a county staff report listed five buildings that house agency services that are more than 40 years old. They house services such as a mental health clinic, vaccinations, a family health center and adult probation supervision.

The supervisors approved a plan in principle that would allow them to lease or purchase larger properties, possibly to create "one-stop shops" where services can be combined to make it easier for customers and more efficient for the county.

The departments also hope to locate their operations closer to areas where more of their clientele live and plan to review options for one or more community outreach offices, the report said.

The current buildings described as inadequate are at: 3177 Ocean View Blvd. in the Memorial neighborhood, 5202 University Avenue in City Heights, 4588 Market St. in Chollas View, 3977 Ohio St. in North Park, and 7798 Starling Drive in Birdland.

Once the agencies find properties and negotiate lease or purchase agreements, they will return to the supervisors for approval.
