New Sycuan Gaming Compact Up For Vote Soon
California lawmakers are prepared to vote on a new Sycuan Gaming compact. The agreement, if approved, would manage gaming on the reservation until 2040.

The new Sycuan gaming compact rules get a review by state lawmakers this week after the tribe and governor's office came to terms a week ago.

Sycuan spokesman Adam Day said the tribe is not considering opening another gaming location.

"We're focused on improvements to our existing facility and other amenities that we may be able to offer for our customers at that location," Day said.

The compact is intended to guide the tribe's gaming activities until 2040.

The new deal allows the tribe to operate two separate gaming facilities like the first compact signed in 1999, but the new agreement adds restrictions.

One restriction is it limits a new facility to Sycuan's existing reservation.

Day said that eliminates the possibility of introducing gaming at the Sycuan Tribe's U.S. Grant hotel property in downtown San Diego.

"That would've been eligible under the '99 compact, but under this new compact that would not be an option," Day said. "So it's a further restriction of where the tribe can locate its facilities in the future, but again, that's an academic discussion because we're focused on the existing casino and making improvements to that existing casino."

A second Sycuan gaming location would have to be located on existing reservation land, it could not have more than 500 slot machines, and gaming could not be the facility's primary function, according to the compact.

The tribe runs a hotel, golf and tennis resort on reservation land just a few miles west of the existing casino. That location meets the compact guidelines.
