"It is an honor for UC San Diego to be recognized once again as one of the nation's top public universities," said Chancellor Pradeep Khosla. "At UC San Diego, we are committed to providing a world-class education for our students and conducting research that benefits our society and world."

The rankings are based on academic reputation, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.

U.S. News & World Report's top national colleges and universities were Princeton University, Harvard, Yale and a three-way tie between Columbia, Stanford and the University of Chicago.

The top western regional universities were Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas; Santa Clara University; Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles; Gonzaga University in Spokane; and Mills College in Oakland.

Point Loma Nazarene University was tied for 17th on the western regional list, and Cal State San Marcos was 87th.
