A gas leak at a La Jolla construction site Tuesday prompted evacuations of nearby buildings until crews got the problem under control.

Workers accidentally ruptured the pipeline in the 8900 block of Villa La Jolla Drive near Villa Norte about 7:45 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire- Rescue Department.

Authorities evacuated several neighboring structures and closed southbound Villa La Jolla Drive to through traffic as a safety precaution, San Diego Fire- Rescue Department Capt. Joe Amador said.
