San Diego’s Top Weekend Events: Art All Around
San Diego's Top Weekend Events: Art All Around GUEST:Nina Garin, editor/producer, KPBS Arts Calendar

There are some quintessential spring activities happening around town this week and they include flowers, art, music, spring festival of movies. Helping good weather cooperates. You will have your pick of some the best of this beautiful season. Maybe something to help you celebrate Mother's Day. Joining me with the weekend preview isfor. Every year the San Diego Museum of Art puts on a fundraiser they call art alive. Can you tell us that's about? Is indoors, don't worry about the weather. This is the San Diego Museum of arts very popular annual fundraiser, to the 35th year they're doing it. They get floral and interpretations of paintings in the permanent collection. They have Batiste, Georgia O'Keeffe, forests from around the county, they come in and interpret how they see and it's next to the painting. They don't want to make it look like the painting is their interpretation of the painting and flowers. S. Some look like it in others are just obviously inspiration through color or shape. I hear the entire museum is decked out in flowers, especially the rotunda. Yes. The rotunda is the highlight. Everyone looks forward to with the GNU do this year. The designers doing it this year abed Lucero and Jim Lennox from Pacific vent productions. Word is they are inspired by fire. As can be Asian influence. There's more to the weekend been for arrangements right? Yes. Tomorrow is the spectacular party called Bloom bash. And then over the weekend they have garden of activity for kids, they have a trunk show. And damn, you can even buy flowers at the pop-up shop. Art alive happens this weekend at the San Diego Museum of Art. Now there's another major art event. This is outside. Tell us about ArtWalk? Has been doing on home assumes long as art alive it's the 32nd year. And, does become sinuous biggest art event that started in venues and little Italy and not just taken over all of the blocks. So hundreds of artists display their work from paintings, photography, jewelry, sculpture, you name it. The basically anything you might be looking for when it comes to and artistic visual endeavor you will find on ArtWalk? Yes. I like to joke that you get your oil paintings of San Diego landscapes but you also see some really interesting stuff. My favorite is the Mexican Embassy where they have all the art from Mexico, there's a little bit of everything. Is it because it's grown to such a large extent there's also big music and dance element incorporated in ArtWalk. There's music all day at stages throughout, but there's also something called dance on the edge. At the stage and has dance companies from all along the county that you probably know, culture shock California ballet and little-known ones will be doing flamingo, African dance, it's equally kind of attracting people the space. So it can be packed? Yes this can be a lot going on. Where do you park? They recommend to come on the Green line trolley to little Italy. Also shop early before it starts in the morning. There are some new parking structures on Cedar and Kettner. And there's free shuttles if you park at the new airport economy lot on Pacific Highway. You can grab a shuttle to the event. I think, early is good advice. Mission federal ArtWalk is Saturday and Sunday and throughout little Italy. There's art the streets as we're just saying and little Italy and music in the streets of normal Heights. What is Adams Avenue unplugged? That is a music festival along Adams Avenue and from University Heights all the way to Kensington. Its focus is mostly folk Americano country music. Or some the artist should see your watch out for? There's these two young guys from Minnesota named the cactus blossom in the play traditional country music. I think we have a clip of them. [Music] That's traditional all right[ Laughter ] There's also Augie Meyers whose legendary in Texas. His performance is not free. Avenue else is free. His is $15 in advance at the Kensington club. Then there's a huge local presence, there's Jerry Harris, Yale Stroman, local favorite Gregory page who we also have a clip of. [Music] That's nice. So when is the Adams Avenue unplugged Festival? It Saturday and Sunday from noon till the evening along Adams Avenue. And I do want to get into the San Diego Asian film Festival. We only have a few seconds left. Tell us what we should look were. It's an eight-day festival at showcase movies around the world that represent the Asian experience, -- It's different from the one they haven't November? Yes to give it as a warm-up. They make so many movie so this is an outlet for them. They show what's happening right now and they're just a bunch of really cool movies that you can catch. And you can check that out on your arts calendar, right? Yes it on KPBS.org/arts. The spring showcase begins today and runs through May 5 and UltraStar mission Valley Center and I've been speaking with the editor and producer of the KPBS arts calendar Nina Garin. Thank you. Think you.
