Brush Fire Near I-15 60% Contained

A pair of brush fires that blackened around three dozen acres alongside Interstate 15 in the Deer Springs area were 60 percent contained early Wednesday.

The fires erupted for unknown reasons roughly a half-mile apart on the west side of the freeway near Castle Creek Country Club about 3 p.m. Monday, according to Cal Fire. Fire crews have been working round-the-clock to extinguish the smoldering blazes.

The blazes, which moved to within about a quarter-mile of each other while scorching an estimated 35 combined acres, caused no reported structural damage or injuries, Cal Fire Capt. Issac Sanchez said.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
