Dr. Lani Simpson Empowers Viewers to Take Charge of Their Bone Health

Healthy bones hold the key to remaining mobile, engaged and independent in life. This is a topic of particular importance for baby boomers and all older Americans for whom a fracture can have debilitating consequences for the rest of their lives. In this new PBS special produced by Twin Cities PBS, Dr. Lani Simpson, DC, CCD, an expert in osteoporosis and author of “Dr. Lani’s No-Nonsense Bone Health Guide,” leads viewers in understanding how to take charge of their bone health and retain their independence.

With passion and clarity, Dr. Simpson reveals how the lifestyle choices we make throughout our lives can have a direct impact on the health of our bones. Critically, she explains what viewers can do now—for themselves and their children—to help prevent osteoporosis and build and maintain bone quality at any age.

Having analyzed thousands of bone density tests as the director of a multi-disciplinary osteoporosis clinic and as a Certified Clinical Densitometrist, Dr. Simpson draws on her wealth of knowledge and lifelong enthusiasm for bone research — and freely shares her personal story as a woman diagnosed with osteoporosis in her 40s who continued roller-skating into her 60s.

Dr. Simpson explains how our bones grow and function. She describes exactly what osteoporosis is, explains the tests to determine if you have it, and how to determine when you should be tested. She offers valuable insights on the best diet and nutritional choices we can make for our bones and demonstrates simple exercises to promote bone health, helping to prevent osteoporosis or slow its progress. She also shares vital information on how to avoid dangerous—and often life threatening—fractures.

As the first national PBS special on bone health, "Stronger Bones, Longer Life" will give millions of Americans the facts they need about their bones to help stay strong and independent throughout their lives.
