San Diego Unified Offers Help, Welcomes Parents As School Year Draws Near
San Diego Unified opened a new building this year to help parents struggling with enrollment issues, like finding the school their student should attend.

San Diego Unified School District is offering help for parents.

Parents have been lining up for a couple weeks ahead of the start of the school year at the Family Welcome and Enrollment Center, Annex 12 on Normal Street in San Diego. They're trying to wade through the options for their students.

"We can welcome them," said Marceline Marques, director of the school district's neighborhood schools and enrollment. "We'll ask them what it is that they need help with. Many times they'll say I don't know what my neighborhood school is, so we'll take them to a computer, look up their address."

Most of this information can be found online. But for parents who may not have a computer at home, staff can walk them through the enrollment process. Help is available in French, Japanese, Spanish and English.

The center is especially helpful for military families relocating to San Diego, Marques said.

The center is part of the school district's Vision 2020 program, which encourages students to at least consider their neighborhood school. The district found parents were picking charter schools or schools in affluent neighborhoods, even when their local school might actually be a better fit.

Classes start Monday at San Diego Unified schools.
