Sewage Spill Closes Portions Of Coronado's Glorietta Bay

Portions of Glorietta Bay in Coronado remained closed early Wednesday as crews continued to clean up and assess impacts following a sewage spill at two nearby locations.

A sewer pump "became overwhelmed" while a city contractor was working on a sewer system construction project around noon Tuesday, causing sewage to surface from manholes near the Bluewater Boathouse Seafood Grill and adjacent to the Glorietta Bay Boat Launch, the San Diego County officials said.

Workers recovered about 200 gallons, but around 3,575 gallons of sewage ultimately ended up in the bay, county officials said.

Portions of Glorietta Bay within 500 feet of the Bluewater Boathouse Seafood Grill and 1,000 feet of the Glorietta Bay Boat Launch were subsequently closed to water contact. County officials said water samples were being collected.

Signs warning of the contamination were posted at the Glorietta Bay Boat Launch, Glorietta Bay Park beach and at access points adjacent to the Bluewater Boathouse Seafood Grill, and will remain up until samples determine that water is no longer affected.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
