Gusty Winds Expected In San Diego County Mountains

Gusty winds are expected in the San Diego County mountains Friday ahead of warmer weather and higher than average surf at the beaches over the weekend.

A National Weather Service wind advisory for the mountains is scheduled to be in effect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. Winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour are expected during the advisory period, along with gusts that may reach up to 55 mph in the windiest locales.

"A trough of low pressure moving inland through the Great Basin today will bring stronger onshore flow with gusty west to northwest winds in the mountains and portions of the deserts today," according to the weather service.

Forecasters said the strongest winds would blow near mountain ridgetops and along desert mountain slopes. Motorists, especially those in high-profile vehicles, were urged to use caution.

The wind will weaken Friday afternoon, and a slow warming trend is expected to begin this weekend amid light winds, forecasters said.

"Dry weather will continue with high temperatures slowly warming to near average," according to the weather service. "Low pressure systems moving inland to the north will bring periods of high clouds. Light winds are expected through the weekend."

A large swell from the west-northwest is expected to hit the coastline on Sunday. Forecasters said it would produce surf of 8 to 10 feet and sets of up to 14 feet south of Carlsbad. Forecasters said the waves may top some jetties and rock structures.

A beach hazards statement, which is less serious than a high surf warning, will remain in effect from Sunday through Tuesday mornings.

Very strong rip currents and minor beach erosion will also be possible until the surf subsides on Tuesday, according to the weather service.
