Poll: Californians Evenly Split On Death Penalty

A new poll finds California voters are equally divided on whether to expedite or eliminate the death penalty.

The latest Field Poll, released Thursday, finds 47 percent of registered voters support replacing the death penalty with life imprisonment.

Forty-eight percent favor speeding up the state’s existing execution process, which routinely takes years and has stalled for the last decade.

Both options could appear on next November’s ballot. Proponents for each are currently gathering signatures.

Voters narrowly rejected the previous effort to end capital punishment in California, defeating Proposition 34 by 52 percent to 48 percent in November 2012.
