San Diego lifeguards have a new contract after members voted to approve the proposal.

The Teamsters Local 911 members voted to accept the agreement worked out between union and city negotiators this week.

The contract doesn't meet the expectations of union leaders.

They were hoping for health care coverage that's in line with the package city firefighters get. Lifeguards say they'll work for that in the future.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
