San Diegans are remembering the 49 victims of last month’s mass shooting in Orlando after a week of police-related killings across the U.S.
Latino groups, religious leaders and LGBT activists will gather at a memorial service on Saturday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral.
Nicole Murray Ramirez, a local Latino and LGBT activist, said this week's shootings in Dallas, Baton Rouge and Minnesota highlight the importance of bridging different groups at events like Saturday's.
“What’s happening in America, what happened in Dallas, it affects all of us. And here in San Diego we hope to show a way of healing, of bringing people together," he said.
Murray said he thinks racial violence is on the rise in the U.S., and that Trump's campaign rhetoric is fueling this trend.
“There seems to be more division, there seems to be more ugliness and attacks and people trying to separate communities," Murray said.
The bishops of the Catholic and Episcopal dioceses will speak at Saturday's memorial service, along with the consul general of Mexico and other leaders.
