A record-breaking summer heat wave will keep the San Diego region toasty Friday into the upcoming weekend.
A heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service for the valleys, mountains and deserts will be in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday as persistent atmospheric high pressure lingers over Southern California. Forecasters said Friday and Saturday will be the hottest days.
In the forecast for Friday are highs of 84 to 89 degrees at the beaches, 95 to 100 degrees in inland coastal areas, 101 to 106 degrees in the valleys, 97 to 103 degrees in the mountains and 113 to 118 degrees in the deserts.
On Thursday, the hot spell pushed afternoon thermometer readings to 91 degrees in Vista, which exceeded the prior top mark of 90, set in 2009, and to 87 degrees in Chula Vista, topping a previous milestone of 84, set in 2005. Several communities also saw their prior July 21 records tied, including Campo with a high of 105 degrees, Ramona at 101 degrees and Escondido, which reached 99 degrees, according to the NWS.
Forecasters advised the public to avoid potentially serious ailments by staying hydrated, avoiding unnecessary outdoor labor and checking on neighbors and relatives — especially those with health conditions and who lack air conditioning.
Authorities also warned against leaving children or pets in parked cars, which can quickly become death traps in high heat.
Slightly cooler weather is expected west of the mountains on Sunday, and will extend to all areas by Monday, according to the weather service.
