Crews Battle Fire In Open Training Area At Camp Pendleton

A wildfire blackened scores of brushy acres in an open training area at Camp Pendleton Thursday afternoon.

The blaze began spreading about noon off Basilone Road, near the center of the 195-square-mile Marine Corps installation north of Oceanside, according to the base's public-affairs office.

By mid-afternoon, the burn zone had grown to about 350 acres, said Gunnery Sgt. Leo Salinas, a Camp Pendleton spokesman. But there were no reports of structural threats or injuries, he said.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
