Public Safety

Lockdown Lifted At SDSU After Suspect In Freeway Crash Caught

A driver authorities thought was armed after he ran from the scene of a car crash about 10:30 a.m. on westbound Interstate 8 near Alvarado Hospital was captured about a half hour later, police said.

The man fled the crash scene, crossed the freeway and was seen near the hospital, said San Diego police Officer Travis Easter.

San Diego State University police issued campus alerts throughout the search for the potentially armed man because the hospital is near the college. The campus was put on lockdown, and police told people to shelter in place. Doors were locked to classrooms during the shelter-in-place order.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
