Escondido Police Looking For Man Who Attempted To Lure Teen Into Car

Escondido police sought Wednesday a man who attempted to lure one teenage girl into his car and may have successfully done so with a second girl in the same area on the same day.

A man in a red convertible pulled up alongside one of the teens in the 1000 block of East Washington Avenue near North Beech Street on May 9 and offered her money to give him directions, according to Escondido police Lt. Justin Murphy. She didn't get in the car, and instead called police.

A witness told police that a man in a similarly described car slowed to speak with another teen girl in the same area, and she did get in his vehicle. But the witness followed them and the suspect dropped the girl off shortly afterward, possibly because he realized he was being followed, Murphy said.

Police described the suspect as a 40- to 50-year-old man driving an older red convertible. Anyone with information on either incident or otherwise suspicious activity involving the suspect was asked to call Detective Elizabeth Hundley at (760) 839-4965.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
