A brush fire broke out in a Chula Vista riverbed, May 26, 2016.

A fire broke out early Thursday in a riverbed in Chula Vista.

The blaze blackened an area of unknown size in the vicinity of Fourth Avenue and Beyer Way. The rugged terrain hampered firefighters' efforts, according to broadcast news reports.

Fire crews used about 2,000 feet of hoseline but still had a hard time reaching the blaze, 10News reported. Firefighters were dropping water from helicopters Thursday morning. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
