SHERLOCK Season 4 promises laughter, tears, shocks, surprises and some extraordinary adventures. #SherlockPBS

Season 4 begins with the nation’s favorite detective, the mercurial Sherlock Holmes, back once more on British soil, as Doctor Watson and his wife Mary prepare for their biggest challenge yet: becoming parents.

Benedict Cumberbatch said he was “genuinely thrilled to be back filming Sherlock with all the cast and crew. I can't wait for everyone to see season four. But you will have to wait...though not for long...And it will be worth it.”

Co-creators, writers and executive producers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss say: “SHERLOCK series 4 - here we go again! Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street - and it always feels like coming home. Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake. This is the story we’ve been telling from the beginning and it’s about to reach its climax.”

Rebecca Eaton, executive producer of MASTERPIECE on PBS says, “This is the kind of news that has our audience cheering. Along with our millions of fans, I can’t wait to see what the boys do next.”

Sue Vertue, executive producer, Hartswood Films says: “It's taken a while to gather everyone together for series four but I can confidently say I think it will be well worth the wait!”

Episode 1: "The Six Thatchers" repeats Sunday, Aug. 5 at 9 p.m. - Sherlock waits to see where Moriarty will make his posthumous move. One mysterious case in particular baffles Scotland Yard — but Sherlock is more interested in a seemingly trivial detail. Why is someone destroying images of the late Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher? Is there a madman on the loose? Or is there a much darker purpose at work? Something with its roots deep in Mary Watson's past…

Benedict Cumberbatch returns as Sherlock Holmes, with Martin Freeman as John Watson, Mark Gatiss as Mycroft Holmes, Rupert Graves as Inspector Lestrade, Una Stubbs as Mrs Hudson, Amanda Abbington as Mary Watson and Louise Brealey as Molly Hooper.
