San Diego's Top Weekend Events: 'Eat,' Drink And Dance

San Diego concert tonight part of a birthday celebration tour for a legendary Cuban singer, little Italy celebrates its fiesta and an art exhibit makes junkfood look fabulous and that is just a taste of the events coming up on the weekend preview joining me is KPBS arts calendar editor Nina Garin. Welcome. Hi, thanks. Fans of world music undoubtedly know Cuban singer Omar Potts Wando pitches in town to celebrate a special occasion can you tell us about that? It's her 85th birthday and so she's having this 85 tour going around and celebrating a birthday at the end of October. She has been singing in Cuba since the 1950s so she has a lot to sing yet she's the only female member of the Buena Vista Social Club where most of us got to know her, right? Yes. So for many years she was a solo singer and a dancer and she joined Buena Vista Social Club in the 90s for those who don't know that is the point of this is Wos -- Buena Vista Social Club group of musicians that represent the music of Cuba and perform in club as she was featured on the album and in the movie. Let's hear Omara Portuondo performing with the Buena Vista Social Club . [ Music ] Who are the other musicians who will perform with? She will not be with Buena Vista Social Club. Tonight she will be with Roberto Fonseca Cuban jazz pianist, and a baronet player and Regina Carter, well-known lion honest -- well-known violinist. Omara Portuondo tonight at the Balboa Theatre. Barrio Logan has a popular our call what makes it much more worth checking out, Nina? There is an exhibition by Pablo Llana a Mexican artist having his first U.S. X visit -- exhibition is called "Eat" and explores deadly effects from junkfood epidemic. You would think junkfood would look pretty bad in these pieces of art. Is that true? No. Quite the opposite. Junkfood is very fun, bright and it makes you want to eat it. It looks very appealing which I guess is the point and the curator says that is the point that it is being communicated without being preachy. I see. It makes you hungry but hated at the same time [Laughter] where is the show happening? I understand it's an indoor space? Smack a place called CM Curatorial named for Chris Martino who opened it and he shares a space with designer Paul of real he has a gallery named Azeal IE it still galleries one spot and of course it is going on during Barrio Art Crawl so you can check out their studio as well as all the others. The opening reception for "Eat" 6 PM Saturday at trying to -- CM Curatorial. Santos 70 opening a new season by showcasing some popular singers so who is going to be singing? Michael Feinstein and Patti Austin are opening the Symphony season with a concert of American jazz and pop standards. And will they be singing with the Symphony? Yes, they will be joined by the orchestra and it is hard to explain so I brought a clip of Michael Feinstein with the Israel Philharmonic singing somewhere from West side story. [MUSIC] Michael Feinstein a singer poet -- performing at the opening of the Symphony season which is always a big deal. EF-. I understand it's a glamorous after party as well. Yes, there is if you have an extra $250 go to the top of the University club and there will be special cocktails, photo booths, dancing, dessert, a grand old time happening after the concert opened to the public it just cost a little extra. Just an extra 250. You know. The concert and party Saturday night Jacobs used -- music center and there are two are related street festivals this weekend beginning with the lawyer art and wine fest that one takes place over two days in the heart of the La Jolla Village it is art that is curated so it is not just watercolors. No offense to watercolors. There are lots of live performances and art activities for families and it is a fun time exploring art and being a downtown La Jolla. Chill out and downtown La Jolla. People know about the little Italy Festa this weekend guess it's an Italian Festival not known for art but people love going because they do the Italian chalk art on the streets so they make beautiful, beautiful chalk paintings and they are up for one day and gone for the next and you can watch them actually do it.
