More than 400 people took the plunge Monday morning to be a part of the 87th annual Oceanside Labor Day Pier Swim.

The one-mile swim is a tradition that began in 1929 and has continued every year since.

Lifeguards who lined the route said conditions were ideal for the swim, with only small waves and no significant currents to push people off course.

The fastest time this year was recorded by 14-year-old Jude Williams, who finished the course in 16 minutes and 18 seconds. That’s more than a minute faster than last year, when surf and currents were stronger.

The fastest woman, Marja Crawford, finished in 18 minutes and 54 seconds.

Oceanside pier is the longest wooden pier on the West Coast. It extends 1,900 feet into the ocean.

The annual event is put on by the Oceanside Swim Club and is a fundraiser for the nonprofit, which focuses on teaching young people how to swim and be safe in the water.
