San Diego's Top Weekend Events: From 'Lion King' To Animal Photography

It is Friday and so it's time to think about Saturday and Sunday. As she does every Friday, Nina Garin joins me to talk about some things to do on the weekend preview. Nina, thank you for coming in. There is a special photography show happening at the San Diego national -- natural history Museum. It is caught the last hurrah. It is beautiful nature photographs of animals and plant life and caves took He is a San Diego and quick He is a local San Diego and. Yes. The show is caught the last hurrah for a reason. I understand he's retiring. He is. He curates photo exhibits for the museum and this is the last one he will be doing. It is a solo show of his own work that he has taken over the last 20 years and it is presented in a gallery named after him. Is he retiring from photography altogether quite No. Just from his museum duties. It looks like he will still be a photographer they just won't be as easy to say. Can you describe his photos a little further quick His photos are gorgeous. They look at paintings -- they look like paintings. He has one of a giant iceberg with waves crashing and then you can see two tiny little penguins. People can see the photographs for free on Saturday. They are having an opening reception at the museum on Saturday and you can go for free. It is only for the gallery. You can't explore the museum but you can see the pictures. The last Hoorah, the photography is at the natural history Museum through December. And that's not all. The lion King is back. [Music] Nina, the lion King returned to San Diego and I understand it's here for quite some time It will be here until October 2. Most shows are only here for a few days so this really speaks to the popularity of the lion King. There may be some people who don't know much about the lion King. Give us some background. It is based on the 1994 animated movie and then it became a Broadway musical in 1997. It has music by Elton John, Tim Rice, it is known for its magical puppets. And it won the Tony for best musical in 1998. I understand there is a local connection. One of the actors is from San Diego. His name is Nick Corleone and he is a long time resident. He has been working nationally and Broadway, Chicago, and now he's back in San Diego for this national toward took It is the lion King and it will be playing at the San Diego Civic theater through October 2. Nina, something that will be quite as family-friendly is a comedy show by Kathy Griffin. She's in town this weekend. She is known for her reality shows. What people might not know is that she is a master improviser. If you Forsan New Year's or -- the New Year's Eve broadcast with Anderson Cooper she can get a little bit naughty. She is not afraid to speak her mind. What else can people expect quick This is her like a boss toward. She's going to talk about politics. She's got plenty to say about Trump. She has lost to say about millennial culture. Just expect to be offended and laugh a lot. Well, if you ready to be offended, Kathy Griffin is that the California Center for the arts and Escondido on Saturday night. Nina, there is a major rock concert happening tonight. This might be the biggest band you have never heard of. Tell us about them. They really are huge. They are really big. They are considered did you two of Latin music. They have been around for ages. They are from Guadalajara, Mexico. It is special for us because they are a Mexican band and they're playing here and that the show is not sold out by now, it will be. There to or is called Latino power. I understand there will be some political elements at the show. They have partnered with an organization and there will be voter registration booth at the concert. They are sending a message to Latinos to go out and vote this year. The band is no more for its valid and love songs. I think you brought a clip of their music. I did.
