The University of San Diego is the 10th most environmentally friendly college in the country, according to rankings published Tuesday by Sierra magazine, a publication of the Sierra Club.

The rankings were based on information submitted by the schools on their environmental practices in food and transportation systems, water and waste management, purchasing procedures, academics and investments, among other criteria.

USD received high marks for food handling, innovation and planning.

"We are honored to receive this national recognition that reflects our efforts to respond to Pope Francis' encyclical, 'Laudato Si' or 'On Care for Our Common Home,''' said USD President James Harris. "USD has developed a bold and comprehensive plan to turn the Pope's call for dialogue into action, and this ranking is a testament to our ongoing sustainability efforts.''

Leading the rankings were College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, and Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont. Sterling College in Sterling, Kansas, State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse and Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon rounded out the top five.

Ahead of USD in the next five were Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Arizona State University in Tempe, UC Irvine and Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

No other San Diego colleges were in the top 150.
