Valentine's Day 2017: San Diego Date Ideas GUESTS: Andy Bayon, founder, SanDiegoDateIdeas.com

This is KPBS Midday Edition I am Maureen Cavanaugh. A Tuesday may not be the best day for a Valentine's Day night out but any day in San Diego can have romantic possibilities. That is according to my next guest Andy founder of San Diego day ideas.com and there are a lot more possibilities than the usual long walk on the beach. And he joins us now for some last minute Valentine's Day advice. Welcome. It is great to be here. How did you get to be an expert on San Diego dates. Since I lived here and moved here about "five years ago I've had this sense of hyper local wanderlust where whatever free time I've had I wanted to go explore the city and see what else is out there so I've been doing that since I moved here in 2015 I had a friend of mine who came to me and said my wife is really on my case to take her someplace else than the same restaurant I don't know what to do Kenny help me out. So I was given them all these recommendations. Go here go there. Here at sunset go here for a drink afterwards and it hit me at that point that helping people help -- helping couples especially have something that enriches their relationship on a regular basis is a great way to share the city with people and give them an easy opportunity to continue making the important connections in their relationship. You cream -- bring out something that I think is so important in what you do. Many couples Inc. of an eye out as going to the same restaurant that they usually got your. Nothing wrong with that but you often advised people to mix things up a bit like start at a wine tasting then move around a bit. Exactly. For me the more that you get outside your normal routine and try something new you open yourself up to this whole range of things he may not have known existed. If you are willing to do a couple things together in a day or just have a consistent new approach to your date night then you learn more about yourself and your partner and you learn more about your city and in continue to appreciate more and more what a place like San Diego has to offer. There are a lot of things that fly under the radar here. There are a lot of expectations on Valentine's Day in particular do you think couples could be putting too much emphasis on it. Yes. There's this must like this on said expectation that Valentine's Day has to be something deeper impressive and what you do or what you by even it does not have to be epic. It is more about just appreciating each other and I think good communication is a key to a successful Valentine's Day and everyone's relationship does not have to be epic. It's really about the rest of the 364 days. And those things that you do for each other and with each other and how you make a continuously great relationship. Valentine's Day is nice to think about but we don't need the pressure. It is not the only day on the calendar. In your years of experience as he said this local wanderlust that you have had what are some of the best places to experience San Diego's scenery. Especially in a romantic way. I love that you said scenery because my appreciation for the outdoors that's my favorite thing to do here is to go hike someplace new to go find a waterfall. There are waterfalls over -- all over San Diego thanks to the recent rains that you can go find any waterfall. You can go out to the Julian area and go for a hike and there are some amazing viewpoint with sunsets that are always romantic. You have the classic beach sunset which is classic San Diego and it is great but my advice to people is to explore the neighborhood. Of somebody listening to the says I would like to go out to any different place tonight for Valentine's Day do you have any suggestions for them. Sure. In particular I like -- it depends what type of atmosphere what I like is the Whetstone Weingarten Baker cell and it's got a really cool atmosphere. There is somber music and tango and jazz and there are a lot of international wines and good food and kind of this nature inspired the core so I recommend that. I think each couple has a different definition of what -- for us it encourages connection. There's craft bar that you have to go through cooler to get there there's lots of cool places to go spend time. What do people get out of a really good date? Is it something couples remember for years? To me the reason my -- it is really about that shared experience it's about something that's memorable that you both expand your horizons and try something you learn more and more about your own interest and say you go to an inch -- exhibition anything while this whole art scene is here so that is open for you to explore more. See what doors can open tonight. I am speaking with Andy Bayon he's the founder of San Diego day ideas.com. Thank you so much. Thank you it's great to be here.
