This is KPBS Midday Edition . The San Diego Symphony is giving us a good reason to see that Harry Potter movie. These events plus the Festival is ahead. Maureen Cavanaugh spoke with Mina Garrett . I hear Harry Potter fans have a special weekend had. What is going on at the Symphony? Harry Potter fans have been excited. There is a film concert series. Is the movie played in the Symphony will play live underneath. How does that work? Where will the musicians be? They are going to be on the stage like they normally are but then they have a giant screen that has Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone up there. It will be all encompassing. Why Harry Potter? What is it about that music that lends itself to something like this? It is a rich score from John Williams. It has a magical quality. It tells a story. You can close your eyes and envision what is going on. It makes for a good layout. Let's listen to music from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. [ MUSIC ] that is really nice. You mentioned this is happening for the first movie. Will they do this for all big maybes? This is the first of a four year project. They are doing this with orchestras across the country. You can expect to see all of the movies within this for your period. The concert series happens Saturday and Sunday at Jacobs music Center. We are in the middle of ballet season. We have the city ballet of San Diego. What are they doing? This is Balanchine and Beyond and it is a night of complex pieces. There are pieces by Jerome and Peter who is legendary choreographers. You say there are four pieces that are presented. Can you give us a highlight or to? The Tchaikovsky Pas De Deux was composed for Swan Lake and it did not make the cut. They decided to make a piece from it. There is the mirror of Jerome Robbins, that has music by Claude. It has mirrors and the perception and it is a slope years. It is rare to get these pieces in San Diego. Yes. You have to have official permission from the New York City ballet. They send out people to teach it correctly and make sure it looks the way it was intended. For the Swan peace, they blew in a special lighting specialists. Interesting. Balanchine and Beyond happens this weekend . There is a nether big show going on this weekend. Kinky boots. What is kinky boots? That is the grand musical based on the 2005 movie. It has songs by Cyndi Lauper. It won a Tony for best musical. A lot of people remember Matilda. When people hear kinky boots, they think this is going to be a receipt kind of show. What is it about? It is based on a true story. There is a documentary about it. It is about a factory owner who wanted to save his business. You partner with a drag performer to make special boots. They realized they are not that different from each other. We have a song from the musical, this is raised you up. [ MUSIC ] That is from Cyndi Lauper? Yes. Kinky boots happens this weekend. You will tell us about the bariatric festival. This happened at Pepper Park in national city. It is a day full of music which I love. [ laughter ] It will be established groups but it is a competition. People have submitted. That is the day where they compete with the high school groups and college groups and performing and competing for top honors. Besides the music, which you love what else can people expect? There will be the ballet, dancing with pretty dresses and food of course, and basically, a day of celebrating Mexican culture and art and awesome times in the sun. I think we have a bit of time to listen to this music. [ MUSIC ] the festival is Sunday at Pepper Park in national city. I have been speaking with me about. Thank you. Thank you. San Diego Symphony Presents "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"

Along with having a great story, the Harry Potter films also have memorable music. The San Diego Symphony celebrates that with its Harry Potter Film Concert Series.

For the first event, 2001's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone" will be screened as the San Diego Symphony Orchestra plays John Williams' score live with the movie. The theater will be equipped with a high-definition giant screen, along with two side screens.

City Ballet of San Diego presents an evening of modern choreography by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins and Peter Martins.

The program will include four dances that are rarely seen in San Diego, "La Source," with music by Leo Delibes; "Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux," with music by Tchaikovsky; "The Afternoon of a Faun," with music by Claude Debussy; and "Hallelujah Junction," with music by John Adams.

Broadway/San Diego stages "Kinky Boots," the Broadway favorite featuring songs by Cyndi Lauper.

Based on a true story, the musical is about a struggling factory owner trying to save his family's business. His luck begins to change after he teams up with a drag performer looking to make high-heeled boots.

Mariachi Festival

Music, Dance

Find San Diego's best arts events on the KPBS/Arts events calendar.

This daylong event showcases established and up-and-coming mariachi groups performing the traditional music of Mexico. It is also a contest, with groups from all over the region competing for top honors.

Along with the music, the fifth annual celebration will also have traditional ballet folklorico, Mexican food and desserts, art booths and more.
