Old Globe Announces 2017/2018 Season

'Benny & Joon,' 'Romeo and Juliet' and The Grinch's 20th anniversary

The Old Globe revealed its 2017/2018 season, and it is a mix of old favorites, original new works and a world-premiere musical.

Let's take a look at what's ahead:

'Benny & Joon' - Sept. 7 through Oct. 22, 2017

A world premiere new musical based on the 1990s movie starring Johnny Depp and Mary Stuart Masterson. It is about a brother, his eccentric sister and a man who takes them out of their comfortable environment. The book is by Kirsten Guenther, music by Nolan Gasser and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein.

'The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey' Sept. 30 through Oct. 29, 2017

A one-man show about a New Jersey detective who investigates the disappearance of a teenager. It is written and performed by James Lecesne.

'Twelfth Night' - Oct. 31 through Nov. 19, 2017

This mistaken identity comedy will be part of the Globe for All Tour, which brings Shakespeare to diverse, multigenerational audiences throughout San Diego. Jerry Ruiz will direct.

'Romeo and Juliet' - Nov. 11 through 19, 2017

Shakespeare's most famous romantic tragedy will be staged by students of University of San Diego's Graduate Theatre Program and directed by Delicia Turner Sonnenberg.

'Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!' - Nov. 4 through Dec. 24, 2017

This holiday favorite, filled with holiday songs like "This Time of Year" and "Fah Who Doraze" celebrates its 20th year.

'The Importance of Being Earnest' - Jan. 27 through March 4, 2018

Oscar Wilde's "trivial comedy for serious people" about the hidden lives of two bachelors will have a lavish staging, directed by Maria Aitken.

'Uncle Vanya' - Feb. 10 through March 11, 2018

The Old Globe commissioned this world premiere translation of Anton Chekhov's celebrated play. It is about a professor who returns to his hometown with a beautiful new wife and announces his plans to sell his estate, leading to the unraveling of his family.

'American Mariachi' - March 23 through April 29, 2018

This world premiere play, staged in association with the Denver Center for the Performing Arts Theatre Company, is about the formation of an all-girl mariachi band. It is written by José Cruz González, directed by James Vásquez and promises plenty of live music.

'The Wanderers' - April 5 through May 6, 2018

A world premiere commissioned by The Old Globe about young Orthodox Jews embarking on an arranged marriage. It is written by Anna Ziegler and will be directed by the Globe's artistic director Barry Edelstein.

'A Thousand Splendid Suns' - May 12 through June 17, 2018

A theatrical adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's best-selling novel, this Southern California premiere is set in the war-torn neighborhoods of 1990s Kabul. Adapted for the stage by Ursula Rani Sarma, this drama follows the journey of two women looking for a better future. (Produced in association with San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater.)

'Native Gardens' - May 26 through June 24, 2018

Written by Karen Zacarías, this drama follows two couples who argue over property lines until it becomes a war of taste, class and gardening. The West Coast premiere will be directed by Edward Torres.

'Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" - July 3 through Aug. 12, 2018

This U.S. premiere, originally produced at The Old Vic theater in London, brings this environmental tale to life using puppets, music and inventive design.
