City of San Diego leaders gathered Wednesday at City Hall to ask for last-minute donations for the 12th annual Project Homeless Connect.

"This is likely to serve more than 1,000 homeless San Diegans," said San Diego Councilman Chris Ward. "Your donation, whether they be socks or other kinds of garments... are in critical need."

The event will be held at Golden Hall in Ward's District 3.

The annual resource fair will be held at Golden Hall next Wednesday. It will offer free dental work, haircuts and information about permanent housing.

"We need the units, the places, the apartments the houses for them to live," Rick Gentry said.

Gentry is president and CEO of the San Diego Housing Commission. The housing commission is organizing next week's event and said they are also looking for landlords to provide affordable housing.

"If you have a property available and would like to participate in this program, we can make sure that it works for you," Gentry said . "With no more financial risk for you than working with the private marketplace."

Last November the housing commission voted to move 6.5 million dollars earmarked for permanent housing to pay for three temporary homeless shelters.

"There were criticisms," Gentry said . "I think that diverting the funding to get people off the streets now into shelters was the right thing to do."

The shelter, run by the Alpha Project, has been open for nearly two months now.

"We’ve had I believe 24 placements come out of that shelter and into permanent housing,"Gentry said .

The 12th annual Project Homeless Connect is next Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The housing commission said they are looking for an additional 50 volunteers to help out.
