Rogelio Mendez is from Tlacotepec, a Oaxacan village that has a long history of migration to San Diego County. Mendez is working on an irrigation project in Tlacotepec that he hopes will create jobs, because he doesn't want more people from his village to have to risk their lives crossing the border.

Lori Shelton has entered every contest since 1996. When her now teenaged daughter was a baby, she integrated her into a hat in a jockey costume with a stuffed horse. Remarkably, she didn't win that year, but was a grand prize winner in 2007.
