Founded in 1874, the San Diego Society of Natural History is the oldest scientific institution in southern California, and the second oldest west of the Mississippi. Early society members established a weather station, petitioned to create Torrey Pines State Reserve, and garnered support for the new San Diego Zoological Society.

The support for the environment epitomized by the Museum creates a perfect setting for the Ordover Gallery, which has gained an international reputation for its fine art photographers, most of whom have portrayed the environment in unique and beautiful ways.

Abe Ordover, owner of the Ordover Gallery, states "Our partnership with the San Diego Natural History Museum is a perfect fit: their mission is essentially to connect people with nature, and the art featured in VISIONS does just that. This is the largest showing of nature-based fine art photography ever undertaken by a natural history museum. Many of the featured artists are nationally prominent photographers whose work regularly appears in books, magazines and exhibitions."
