Nicole Lozare
Nicole Lozare was born into a news family. Her father was a journalist and her grandfather worked for a newspaper in the Philippines. Today, she is one of two inaugural Fellows for the Jacobs Project for Reporting Excellence at KPBS. Nicole can be seen and heard on KPBS radio and television. She also is the co-host of Off Mic, a new blog about life as a journalist at KPBS.
Before KPBS, Nicole was a reporter at the Pensacola News Journal in Florida for seven years. She also hosted the newspaper’s weekly podcast. The paper awarded her a Publisher’s Ring for Excellence in 2004. She also belonged to a team of reporters who garnered Pulitzer Prize finalist status in 2005 for their coverage of Hurricane Ivan.
Nicole graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in broadcast journalism and a minor in political science. In 2001, she was awarded a fellowship with the Casey Journalism Center on Children and Families. She spent her youth in the Philippines and in Singapore. Nicole moved to the United States in 1991. She calls Baltimore her hometown and the Maryland Terrapins her basketball team.
Nicole has a bunny who is litter-trained. In 2005, his photograph appeared in a newspaper as the “Easter Bunny.” She also has a dog. His name is Alfie.
