I love Amazon.com, and I benefit from not having to pay sales tax. However, I also emphasize with brick and mortar stores. I live in La Jolla and walk past many empty shops and restaurants here and throughout other parts of the city. I believe it would be best if Amazon DID have to pay taxes, but as Dr. Gill noted, it's difficult to make them do so for a variety of reasons. I would suggest the state offer a compromise: have Amazon pay half of CA's state usual sales tax. Do, so at, 7.5%, Amazon would pay 3.75%. After all, those millions of deliveries to CA residents have made a huge contribution in ruining our freeways and roads. Also, CA businesses get fewer sales, which means CA misses out on taxes it would otherwise collect. Those who process the orders in other states get the jobs, not CA.
