Supporters Confident They Can Raise Funds For New Central Library

To jimvsmij, the New Library will have free wi fi throughout the facility. Actually the current Central Library and all the 35 branches already have free wi fi. The City library was among the first nationwide to do that. You are right, digital media available for handheld devices is an important element. The Library already has eBook available for download. But, not everyone has an eReader or even a computer for that matter. A central role for the Library is to help close the digital divide so everyone has the resources they need to succeed -- and the plans for this new library look like they accomplish that goal. Additionally, most books (not many -- most) are not digitized and available for download. That is why having a physical collection is so important. And the new library will allow for specialized physical collections that will never likely be digitized.

I am so glad we are building this library!

What's In The New Downtown Library Design?

What a great vision for downtown, San Diego and book lovers everywhere! I am a San Carlos resident and user of that branch. I know my branch library needs the support a new Central Library will provide.

As Rob Quigley said today, this is an opportunity San Diego cannot miss. The Natural History Museum, Old Globe Theater, Del Mar Fairgrounds and County administration building were all built during the Great Depression. With no bonds or funds from the General Fund required, how short sighted would we be not to provide this essential civic asset for future San Diegans. Let's do this!
