Federal Judge Orders Removal Of Mt. Soledad Cross

The cross on Mount Soledad was placed there originally as a religious symbol (and as a threat to Jews and others to stay out of La Jolla).

When it's appropriateness was finally questioned, it was wrapped inside a so-called "Veterans Memorial" to protect it from court removal.

It should be removed and be replaced with an enormous US flag if it is still a true veterans memorial.

San Diego's Military, Civilian Families Face Food Stamp Cut

There ought to be a special place in hell for those who would fund our military adventures around the world by cutting food to the families of those who fight the battles.

Vietnamese Refugee And Navy Veteran Reunite On The USS Midway

Regarding the 35th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, I have been listening to coverage this morning on KPBS radio about the herioc rescue efforts of members of the USS Midway, as well as the amazing work done by Marines at Camp Pendleton to provide instant housing for 18000 refugees, both of which took place 35 years ago.

While it's always nice to recognize heroism, at anniversaries like this, we also need to stop and remember that our government was the cause of all the deaths and misery in the lives of millions of Vietnamese, which cannot be swept under the rug becuase a few US sailors and Marines acted with kindness and care.

As a country, we voluntarily invaded and brought death and destruction to Vietnam, and well need to admit it, learn from it, and stop pretending that the heroic actions of a very few has somehow lessened our blame.
