---California law enforcement agents seized 1,200 guns from -the- mentally ill and others banned from keeping firearms.
Ms Sharma and Editors err. The bans are specific, "the" mentally ill is not. It is poor editing. Banning "the' Jews or "the" Blacks is concrete example of the error.
Banned from owning firearms are -people- declared by a court of law a danger to themselves or others because of a mental illness. It might not be as concise as "the" mentally ill, but it is precise.
May I ask, what was your intention as editors? My belief: You were repeating habituated words, rather than reporting.PLease correct your error, quote the language of your state's gun laws.
