Retiring In Costa Rica: The Dream And The Reality

A report in a Canadian travel magazine stated that a tourist paid $160.US to rent a $7,000 ATV for eight hours in Jaco.
The same tourist stated that he also rented a $27,000 Toyota SUV in Costa Rica for $50. per day. The cost to rent the ATV is obviously way too high, and might help explain why many people do not return to Costa Rica to vacation. They come to see if there really are Toucans sitting on every stop sign, or if there is a monkey in every tree, but once they see that is not true and the costs are so high to vacation here "they do not come back".

Retiring In Costa Rica: The Dream And The Reality

There was no mention of why Dungan lost his home in Costa Rica. If it was in a gated community he could have simply rented it to someone. I fully agree with renting for the first few visits to Costa Rica. After four years we purchased a gated community building lot for $15,000 and having a home built for $30,000 Virtually all real estate suitable for North Americans is grossly over priced. We are close to Bejuco Beach, so we could always turn to renting to surfers if Costa Rica turns bad on us.
