Filner Mediation Results In Deal; Council Votes Friday

Clean government = oxymoron
Doesn't matter who's there. But Filner went way, way too far.

"Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority: still more when you superadd the tendency or the certainty of corruption by authority. There is no worse heresy than that the office sanctifies the holder of it." John Dalberg-Acton, 1st Baron of Acton

Effort To Recall Mayor Filner Officially Launches

These now 17 ladies with their panties in a bunch, and the many others who are afraid to speak out, appear to be on the verge of effecting monumental political change in our city. I believe them and salute them.

Effort To Recall Mayor Filner Officially Launches

The unions have too much money invested in Filner to let him go down without a fight. His list of supporters has shrunk to organized labor and its allies. Today's event is assuredly a union demonstration of it's ability to gather a crowd and make noise more than their individual members true feelings about Filner. "It’s an awkward situation, but we have a lot invested in him. We believe in due process, so let it take its course." Tom Lemmon, San Diego County Building and Construction Trades Council
Due process can take place after Filner leaves office. Basically he's left office already, abandoning the city for the last 24 days and we still don't know when he'll be back.

City Employee Levels New Allegations Against Filner

There are two giant problems. Filner's ego and his libido.

Filner Vows To Move Forward As Mayor In Recall Response

Strata you need to re-read the statements of women who are speaking out. He's a serial groper, putting his hands on women whenever he finds a vulnerable opportunity. To be as clear as possible, that includes boobs and butts. Through clothes or under clothes, ain't no nevermind - although allegedly, both have happened. And whether it happens when you're in a headlock or when you're in a room alone with him or when you're posing for a picture with him, it's sexual harrassment and could in some cases be sexual assault. It's not a weakness it's an abuse of power. Anywhere in the real world the man would be summarily fired. Frankly it makes me very sad that there are still people in our community who think he's cute and curmudgeonly. Looking for a wife... Seriously?

Filner Vows To Move Forward As Mayor In Recall Response

Philosopher, let me tell you what I told my children when they were very small. If someone puts their hands on your bathing suit parts, you must tell them NO and then tell another grown-up. Hands on bathing suit parts go beyond flirtation. When someone puts hands on your bathing suit parts and implies you can only keep your job or forward your agenda if they can continue to touch you, that's called intimidation and harrassment. Plus it's just icky.

Now if we're going to have Nietzsche throw down, I want to play!
"The snake which cannot cast its skin has to die. As well as minds which are prevented from changing their opinions; they cease to be mind."
And
"Battle not with monsters lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."

I agree 100% that recall is a risk and a waste of hard earned taxpayer money. But something must be done to remove Filner from office if he refuses to resign. I have not heard or read of a state level intervention. Interesting idea. It's very hard to see the city suffering so and feel void of options for solution. Ridiculous that one man is entitled by city charter to cause so much harm.

Filner Vows To Move Forward As Mayor In Recall Response

Well ok, let's look deep into our crystal ball, say one year hence with Mr. Filner still in office:

Women are not allowed to meet with him privately, and fear and distrust him; disenfranchising 50% of his constituency. The FBI investigation continues or ends in charges, and trial. The harrassment suit continues. Mr. Filner continues to bully and intimidate people in his office and members of the community. The atmosphere of fear and intimidation on the part of anyone who needs to do business with the city also continues. Quid Pro Quo continues, albeit subtly.

OR, Mr. Filner's week of "intensive therapy" is completely successful and he is also visited by the ghosts of winter holidays past, present and future and is transformed from mysoginistic, deceitful, manipulative, angry Scrooge to benevolent, generous, consensus seeking, rational Scrooge.
