Jacobs On Plaza De Panama Plan: 'It's Over'

The plan to tack on the bypass bridge seemed rushed with no effort to make it consistent aesthetically with the architecture of the park. At least one of the renderings I saw showed something you might see at an interchange on the I-8. Please, do better in Balboa Park.

U-T San Diego Circulation Drops 5 Percent In Last Year

Last Sunday was the last delivery of my subscription to UT. I will not be renewing. Have been checking out Wall Street Journal and New York Times for a few Sundays now. I can buy these with my coffee at Starbucks 1st thing in the morning, and this has become my new Sunday morning routine. Nice.

How Obama Got His Groove Back, And Other Debate Takeaways

Read the transcript from Sep 12, 2012: "No acts of terror ... We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done." Clearly, Obama already considered at least the possibility that this was an act of terror.

Pretty obvious that during the debate, Romney did not recall this detail of the Sep 12 speech. Then based on his misconception, he went for a gotcha-moment, and it backfired. Just that simple.

And no Candy Crowley consiracy either. What? Can she see the future and know that Romney was going to gap at the debate?

Shades of the "Birthers".

Supporters Of Prop 34 Say Death Penalty Is Broken And Can’t Be Fixed

To Mrs. Catherine Burke,

I just wanted to say how deeply saddened I was to read this, I just cannot imagine what you have gone through.

I also want to say that I feel capital punishment is justified for those who commit the most henious of crimes when there really is no doubt about the guilt of the defendant. And I think there are cases where there really is no doubt. Yours sounds like it may be one of them. My opinion is that some of these crimes, these murders, are so vicious and savage, that the murderer is deserving of death. We should strive for a system that relentlessly pursues justice, and in some cases death is justice.

It's Official: U-T San Diego Is Buying North County Times

Just like DanW, we've been long time UT subscribers, and were wary when DM bought the paper. Also noticed the editorial following the Dem's convention portending a doomsday scenario would play out for the US if Obama is re-elected. Decided to switch to the NC Times, but will rethink. Starbucks carries some good out of town papers. KPBS online and on the radio has local news. Hmm.

Supreme Court Upholds Obama Health Care Law

Very happy to see the Affordable Health Care Act re-affirmed by the US Supreme Court. Making insurance more available/affordable for the millions of uninsured, who will now start contributing to paying for the healthcare - that they will need regardless of personal choice - will be a net benefit on many levels. It is a great idea, and only the government is in a position to enforce the changes that were necessary. It may not be a "responsibility" or core function of government, but it is a great idea.

Preservationists Fear Changes Would Jeopardize Balboa Park's Historic Status

There doesn’t seem to be much additional road to be built in the proposed bypass, just a small bridge around the back side of a building, over an area that isn’t being used, to connect the “West Gate” with the existing Alcazar parking lot. From there, roads already exist to continue to the parking areas behind the organ pavilion. That certainly seems doable without undue disturbance.

On the other hand, while there will be some loss of parking spaces in the plaza, that’s relatively limited and doesn’t seem to justify the construction of an ugly multistory parking structure.

PDSD, a trolley to take people up the hill to Balboa Park from downtown/convention center would seem to be an obvious need. What happened there?

Report Blames ATF Agents For Botched Gun-Trafficking Operation

PDSD, thanks for posting the NY Times story.

A few of the claims are a bit overblown. For example, the questionable implication that the road improvement of Vista Way caused that medical building to appreciate 60%. Don’t think so.

On the other hand, I have been concerned for some time with my congressman. For example, soon after Issa became the head of the Oversight Committee, he made statements pretty much declaring that he would use the committee to do battle with the Obama administration. I am not a fan of the same old partisan in-fighting we’re all getting tired of. Also, I was not aware of some of the other issues brought up by the NY Times article. For example, really is there any question that Issa had a conflict of interest when he was involved in the investigation of Toyota for acceleration problems when his company was a major supplier of alarms? Really ridiculous when he claimed that his relationship with Toyota makes him even better at investigating Toyota than his fellow unconflicted house members...because he would say “hold it, I’m not letting you off the hook now.” What???

Can you post the link to the UT story you are referring to? Might be interesting/entertaining.

Opening Arguments Delivered At Haditha Trial

MissionAccomplished, what’s wrong, you can’t come up with a single board response on the KPBS website to all the articles about the insurgent suicide bombers, who have targeted civilians, including women and children? I am happy with my opinion, as much as it gets under your skin and makes you personalize this discussion.
