Al Jazeera's coverage is unapologetically international in scope, and its coverage of recent events in the Middle East has shown how far ahead of the curve this channel is when compared to virtually all major US-based media outlets, including National Public Radio.
So, it was particular embarrassing to listen to this interview on These Days. The host echoed Bush-era terminology by saying that "Al Jazeera is a few steps up from Al Qaeda." It was clear from the line of questions that Al Jazeera English had not been viewed prior to the interview. When a caller said that the U.S. military "didn't mean" to take out Al Jazeera's office in Kabul, I immediately wondered about the billions of dollars spent on weaponry, and the efficiency of "smart bombs." London newspapers ran a story in 2005 about Bush wanting to bomb Al Jazeera's headquarters. I suppose that would have been another innocent mistake.
Watch Al Jazeera for yourself and decide. To Al Jazeera: thanks for the fresh perspectives.
