One day we learn that 1 million people in California have or soon will lose their unemployment benefits - the next next day we learn the the unemployment rate has dropped! An economic miracle? No, just more misuse of statistics to make both state and federal government look good. If you don't get "unemployment benefits" benefits you are not unemployed, at least not as far as the government is concerned.
The fact is that despite the critical problem level of unemployment here in California the state continues to drive out jobs that can support a middle class life. KPBS should be doing more in depth looks into real issues rather than blithely reporting the incorrect, overly optimistic, forecasts of these faulty statistics.
As the failed "Green Jobs" revolution continues here who will be left to donate to KPBS? Is a state full of minimum wage, part time, hospitality and service workers and a few well to do academics an adequate demographic for a successful Pledge Week? I think not.
While you are concerned about the college grads what about the thousands of skilled and semi-skilled hardworking folks whose jobs in construction, manufacturing, etc. have been run out of California by our "enlightened" leaders in Sacramento?
Ms. Pico, Your lapse in manners by failing to address former Governor and Senator Wilson by at least one of his titles reflects poorly on KPBS as a professional news organization. Almost all national and local news organizations honor high offices held by people on their news shows. Would you call former President Clinton by Mr.? How about former Secretary of State and Senator Hilllary Clinton - would you call her Ms.? Or Maybe Hillary ?
Maybe it is just conservative former office holders who deserve no respect in your reporting.
Imagine that, Filner needs his own personal lawyer so he can extort more money for who? Lawyers will be the only winners in this affair. Instead of drawing tourists to San Diego millions will be spent in the courts. All those downtrodden folks Filner claims to be helping will soon be wondering when the layoff notices will come.
51% is not an overwhelming mandate and the president appears to have missed that point. His inaugural speech clearly set the stage for class warfare and a presidential agenda unfettered by political concerns for a future election.
With true unemployment near 15% and industry faltering, we cannot look forward to an economic recovery while the administration drives energy costs into the stratosphere. It seems odd that unemployment only counts statistically if you are collecting unemployment benefits - another "entitlement" that will be paid by future generations?
I used to express concern for the future of my grandchildren but I have now changed that to concern for the future of my adult children - they will not be better off than my generation.
News or gossip? TMZ and the like have their place, but I look to KPBS to follow real news. If this is a new direction for KPBS news I will change my donations.
Until Filner gets Dumanis and Duffy to back off -not likely in my opinion, little is likely to change.
Laplayaheritage has laid out the details above. The threat to confiscate buildings from landlords who rent to marijuana dispensaries remains an effective deterrent.
Candy Crowley and her network CNN were the real winners of the debate. Her biased handling of the moderator duties makes the American people the losers. I am sure Obama supporters heaped praise on her and her employers, but she has definitely lost any creditability as a journalist.
Jim Lehrer set the standard and Candy failed to measure up. Let's hope Bob Scheiffer (sp?) does better.
It is high time that LA's liberal paper gets a new viewpoint. It is probably too late to save LA from eventual bankruptcy but there may still be a few fiscally responsible people there that would enjoy reading news with a different point of view.
Where is the environmental outcry over the governor's hypocritical suspension of the requirement for summer blend gasoline? California's overbearing regulations have already run many companies and thousands of jobs out of the state so what makes this special? The new carbon regulations and fees are going to make all forms of energy more expensive - should this waiver of regulations on gasoline give us hope that fiscal sanity is on the horizon? I think not.
