Report: UT-San Diego Buys NC Times

After subscribing to the UT for 25 years we cancelled a month ago. The editorial about the "5 Worst Presidents" pushed us over the edge. I'm glad this news is out now as I am looking for a new paper to subscribe to and was considering the NC Times. Looks like I will need to get the LA paper or just get an on-line subscription to another out-of-town paper. The UT's current policies are just inflaming what is already a huge problem in the US.

Project Aims For Nutrition While Keeping The Soul In Soulfood

That song is a little off. Eating well but smoking "ganja"? And tap water in 99% of the US is perfectly fine -- poor people should not be spending money on bottled water.

Project Aims For Nutrition While Keeping The Soul In Soulfood

Man, KPBS is really going downhill. This piece is being repeated again? It's poorly produced and one airing was more than enough. The contstant repeats of material during the day are bad enough but these periodic repeats are crap. It may be time to switch to satellite.

To Clean Up SD Budget Dump, Talk Trash

Tom, as I mentioned in my first note, I am more than willing to pay for trash service. I agree that the city needs more revenue and if the current system is not fair, I am willing to true it up. The problem is that I am not willing to give the city -any- additional funds until the pension mess is cleaned up. I won't vote for -any- measures that involve more taxes, no matter how sound such a measure might seem. I think the city needs to understand this fundamental issue as I don't think I am the only one in this boat. There are multiple pension related issues -- the purchased service years, the 13th check, the double dipping, the annual payouts that exceed salary averages -- that have to be cleared up first. If there is a way other than bankruptcy to make this happen, I am all for it.

Escondido 'Bomb House' Burning Details

Why is this burning being done on a weekday? If there is any problem I-15 will be closed during rush hour.

Also, how can the city decide to burn down a citizen's house without agreeing to pay for it? The guy that created the chemical mess is a renter, the owner of the home is getting robbed.

Our hazardous materials guys should be cleaning this up, that is what they get paid for. Burning it down makes it many times more risky for neighbors and everyone else.

I would be fine with paying for trash service, but not if any of the cost savings goes to support the pension mess in any manner. I do not think anything will pass without major pension overhaul. Bankruptcy and reversal of the deals that caused the pension shortfall is the only solution at this point.

Mayor Calls For $76 Million In Cuts, Urges Voters To Back Prop. D

I am voting no on Prop D and I don't expect it to pass. The pension mess is going to have to be cleared up by legal action and bankruptcy. The sooner we move towards this direction the better.

"No On D" Supporters File Lawsuits

Getting a firefighter job in SD is almost impossible as there are so many applicants. What does that tell you? Yes it is a job with risk but it is also a job that many people want to do. Same thing with cops, there is no risk of not having enough applicants if the pay is appropriate. There is no reason that these public service employees should have the pensions they do.

"No On D" Supporters File Lawsuits

The sales tax is destined to fail. I am a fairly liberal Democrat that normally votes for tax increases that make sense. I will never vote for a tax increase until the pension system is totally reformed and that includes any current egregious payments to retirees. I would encourage the city to look at bankruptcy as an option as there seems to be no other legal option. Anything less -- like a new hire only policy -- will not be acceptable to me.

"Brownouts" Slow Fire Department Response To Choking Toddler

It's too bad so little time was spent on the pension issue. The pensions that firefighters get is obscene and I don't think any tax increase will pass until that issue and all pension-related issues are solved. I would rather see the city go bankrupt and get out from the pension obligations than continue to throw money into a hole.
