Expecting all parents, specially Latino parents to advocate for their students in Special Ed is completely unrealistic and irrational. First of all there are language barriers that make this process impossible. If fluent English speakers have a hard time advocating and understanding the education and legal jargon, then latinos whose first language is not English will be completely lost. Second of all, in certain cultures, it is disrespectful to ask questions and to disagree with service providers. We need to get Education Advocates at no cost to families back out to the community. Not having them there is an equal rights issue.
