The Do's And Don'ts Of Holiday Etiquette
Ms. Swann missed the boat with the caller concerned about her mother in law making comments about dessert...with her teen age daughters within earshot.
Eating disorders are a growing concern among young men and women. Taking her mother in law aside prior to dinner and reminding her that her comments about "some people can/cannot eat dessert" are hurtful and impactful would be my choice. In her zeal to not alienate her mother in law, the caller is allowing her to be rude and to create a situation that could have lasting results. Why is it wrong to remind someone that untoward remarks have consequences?
