If someone called me up and asked for my "whole database" I would laugh too. I commend you on pursuing this story, but you are overdramatizing their response.
I agree we have a right to the information, but wholesale dumping of raw data to a reporter to spin how he/she wants in this day and age of bias reporting is unrealistic and extremely dangerous. Please don't take that to mean I am calling you bias, but I do not know you or your reporting whatsoever, so I would come down on the side of caution, and that would be not giving you the information right away or in raw format.
Also, I think it is extremely unfair to even insinuate that an agency is running around willy nilly killing animals for no reason. Does that sound like something a reasonable person would do? No it does not. Granted weird people work in all organizations, but before coming to that conclusion I would want a good amount of supporting evidence.
I love this idea, but like it or not, we (city, county, or state governments) do not have the resources to invest in these types of projects at this time. I hope we will at some point, but until that future time, this will be another sounds nice but not practical type of idea.
$300 million? I'm sorry but that just sounds rediculous.
“The existing residents do not lose rent control," he said, "they get to keep rent control as long as they live in their coach - only after they move does it go to market rate."
So what's the problem?
These little slices of fantasy life really need to be brought into the 21st century. Why should trailer parks not be subject to the same market pressures or stresses of apartments or traditional homes?
Next up should be Prop 13, this horrible legislation needs to be overturned immediately. It, like rent other price controls, harms the market and is a relic of a bygone era.
Also, I think it's about time to do away with the term "fixed income" for seniors. I have a job and make a salary, how is that less fixed than social security? I have to budget my money around my salary just like someone on social security has to budget based on their monthly check.
Nothing personal to Mr. Brady or NPR/KPBS, but the revolving door of news stories about high gas prices is just boring at this point. I bet if you pull up this story, and one that was written about high gas prices last summer, they would be almost identical. Reasons for high prices: speculators, Middle East issues, and refinery maintenance/issue, economy rebounding, more demand in China/India. What can you do about it: inflate your tires, consolidate driving trips, buy a smaller car.
At what point do you just want to scream?
The most important part of this story is the end where he talks about these prices being the new normal. It's unfortunate this was not the subject of the entire piece. World demand is a much bigger story than refineries and speculators.
I'm very curious about this topic because I've heard much about it reported in developing countires, but what exactly does someone do with $250 to start a small business?
Leslie Paige, who represents watchdog group Citizens Against Government Waste, says the government should withdraw the dollar bill from the market and force Americans to use the coins.
"I think Americans will definitely embrace the dollar coin if they're just given the opportunity," she says.
How exactly are "force Americans" and "given the opportunity" the same thing? That is ridiculous!
I also find this unacceptable:
Several congressional leaders contacted by NPR declined to comment for this story.
The Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee has jurisdiction over coins. Its chairman, Tim Johnson (D-SD), would not agree to be interviewed about dollar coins.
It made sense for them to have the break initially to get online action moving, and I think that policy accomplished that goal.
I would highly doubt Amazon would see much of a reduction in sales just because they were forced to collect sales tax. This is one of those situations where it has been "too good to be true" for a long time and people need to realize that it is only right to pay the sales tax for something you purchase.
Republican's are getting more and more crazy as the Obama years go on. I think they are truly lost. I mean you would have to be to give Sarah Palin the map.
All kidding aside, we do need sustained $4-5/gallon gas in this country. I think most American's still do not realized the actual price we pay for continuing to burn gas in our cars on our daily commutes. It is much higher than $3.45.
I don't know, sometimes I question even the point of these type of debates/discussions.
Most rational religious folk I know believe in God but acknowledge that the bible is a book of parables. If that is the case, then what is your belief in God based on and what really is the point? I mean you can be a good person and lead a noble life without being religious. I get the comfort angle, but if that is truly the case, why push it on other people and make it a political and moral fight all the time?
I must say I love this quote from your article Tom:
“He told me a true skeptic must be an agnostic, not an atheist, because the existence of God can be neither proven nor disproven.”
Proving a negative is a false argument, ask any scientist.
There is an invisible pink elephant in the room. Oh yeah, prove to me he isn’t there. See how dumb that sounds?
