A more shocking and sadder state of affairs lies ahead for the profession of music education... though more people want to dwell on the plight of children who do not get to have music. Teachers will need to volunteer which will ultimately be the demise of the entire profession. We are not a socialist country (yet) and El Sistema will not work here in America. Instead, we should allow music programs in schools to die if they must, and begin to build for-profit community music centers that can sustain our profession until the cycle returns and our societies once again understand how important the arts truly are.
